Go for an offroad ride in a 6WD Pinzgauer.

The Kohala Waterfalls Adventure begins with a drive along the Big Island coastline, where the environment transitions from arid to lush.  Along the way you’ll journey up the North Kona and Kohala coastlines where lava flows from Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and The Kohala Mountains can be seen.  Plantation towns of Hawi and Kapaau, the site of the life-size statue of King Kamehameha I, are passed through before the real adventure begins. 

Hawaii Forest and Trail has their own private trail system.

At the end of the road, a short off-road drive in a 6WD Pinzgauer will lead you to the 1.5 mile hiking trail.  The hiking trail follows the early 1900s plantation-era Kohala Ditch Trail, and as you follow the looped trail you’ll see tunnels blasted and carved from rock, walk over an aqueduct on two bridges and learn the story and strive it took to build a 22 mile irrigation system through this long-ago sugar cane plantation.  Ancient Hawaiian history is included as well, with a visit to ta former taro farming site included in the hike.  Throughout the hike seven splendid waterfalls grace the trail.  Your hike concludes with the opportunity to take a refreshing swim in a cascading waterfall.
