Polynesian Cultural Center a Popular Hawaii Attraction

A vacation in Hawaii isn’t complete without a trip to the Polynesian Cultural Center, located on the island of Oahu. Located on 42 acres, this museum is dedicated to showcasing the local history and traditional culture of Hawaii, as well as other islands in the Pacific Ocean.

The Polynesian Cultural Center is one the most popular Hawaii Oahu attractions as it offers a variety of activities, shows, exhibits and special events.

Some of the center activities include:

• IMAX and Canoe Rides: The center has its very own IMAX Theater as well as a lagoon, where visitors can take canoe rides from one end of the park to the other, all with a native tour guide.

• Rainbows of Paradise: This canoe pageant is located at the lagoon and is scheduled for 2:30pm each afternoon. This parade of canoes showcases the signature dance moves of each of the islands represented at the park.

• Ha-Breath of Life: The PCC is world-famous for this evening show, which takes place each night at 7:30pm. The show features the many varieties of songs and dances of Polynesia, including the Hula, tamure, otea, titi torea, haka, poi, meke, tau olunga and taualuga. Advanced reservations are highly recommended for this show.

• Ali’I Luau: Translated to “Royal Feast” this popular luau show offers traditional Polynesian fare, included pork cooked in an imu or “underground oven.” This event begins at 5:15pm.

• Rapa Nui: Translated to “Easter Island,” this special exhibit pays tribute to the 1850s mission once run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Each of the major Polynesian island groups is represented at the Polynesian Cultural Center. Each island has a recreated traditional village, in which hourly performances and learning experience take place. The islands represented include Hawaii, Samoa, Aotearoa (present day New Zealand), Fiji, Tahiti, Tonga and Marquesas.

Special events at the Center include:

• Moanikeala Hula Festival:
• World Fireknife Championship and Samoa Festival
• Te Mahana Hiro’a Tahiti
• Te Manahua Maori Cultural Competition
• Haunted Lagoon
• Christmas in Polynesia

The Polynesian Cultural Center is open Monday-Saturday. The island villages, except for Samoa and Tongan which have shows that last till 5:30pm, close at 5pm. A Hawaii vacation package isn’t complete without a trip to this interesting and engaging cultural center.
