Hawaii Oahu Attractions Offer Something New this Spring
There are several new additions and events taking place in Oahu Hawaii this spring. From expanding attractions to special festivals, Oahu offers plenty of Hawaii activities for visitors.
One of the most popular Hawaii Oahu attractions is the USS Arizona Memorial Visitor Center at Pearl Harbor. Recently, Phase I of the $58 million renovation was completed. The renovation includes a new central ticketing facility for tours to the USS Arizona Memorial, the Battleship Missouri Memorial, the USS Bowfin Museum, USS Oklahoma Memorial and the Pacific Aviation Museum. Other additions include a new research and education center and expanded bookstore, restroom and snack bar. The renovation are expected to be complete by December 2010 and, when complete, the new visitor center will include a new museum and expanded landscaped grounds.
Another popular activity while on a Hawaii vacation is visiting the Bishop Museum. The Bishop Museum is the largest museum in the state and the premier natural and cultural history institution in the Pacific. They have added a new outdoor exhibit focused on Hawaii’s indigenous plants called The Native Hawaiian Garden. The new exhibit is expected to be open early this summer, and once complete, visitors will be able to go on a Garden Tour, during which an array of coastal and historic plant life are on display.
Iolani Palace, a National Historic Landmark in downtown Honolulu, has recently expanded their hours to accommodate visitor interest. This Oahu attraction is now open on Mondays. Their full schedule is Monday-Saturday, from 9am-5pm.
The Doris Duke Theatre at the Honolulu Academy of the Arts is featuring the Oiwi Film Festival, showcasing the work of indigenous Hawaiian filmmakers, now through May 26.
Other Hawaii Oahu activities include Snooze in the Zoo and Doze with the Dolphins. Snooze with the Zoo is a family-friendly event that takes place once a month at the Honolulu Zoo. Visitors are invited to attend the event, during which you get to camp on the zoo grounds, eat a delicious dinner, go an evening tour of the zoo, enjoy a campfire and smores, and enjoy a morning tour of the zoo, complete with breakfast. Doze with the Dolphins is similar to Snooze in the Zoo. Visitors are invited to stay overnight at Sea Life Park, where they can choose to sleep next to the dolphins or the sharks on the reef tank, and enjoy a flashlight tour, treasure hunt and learn about the animals’ nocturnal behaviors.
