The Big Island of Hawaii is a Popular Vacation Destination

The Big Island of Hawaii is the youngest island in the Hawaiian chain. It is home to a variety of landscapes and environments, providing plenty of terrain to explore on your Big Island Hawaii vacation. Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, is located here, as is the tallest sea mountain in the world, Maunakea. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is one of the major Big Island Hawaii attractions, as visitors can explore the volcanic terrain available at the 330,000 acre park and the area offers insight on the origin of the Hawaiian Islands.

The Kona area of the Big Island is another popular spot to visit. Home to the Historic Kailua Village, it is a great place to shop, eat and enjoy Hawaii nightlife. Many visitors like to tour historic sites like Hulihee Palace, Puuhonua o Hanaunau National Park & Kaloko-Honokohau National Historic Park as part of their activities in Kona Hawaii. The southern area of Kona is perfect for snorkeling, whale watching & dolphin watching excursions, and deep sea fishing.

The Hamakua Coast is another great attraction as it features lush tropical rainforests, waterfalls and lovely seaside views. One of the Big Island’s most famous waterfalls, Akaka Falls, is located here as is the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden & World Botanical Gardens. The Waipio Valley Lookout provides excellent panoramic views of the Waipio Valley and is a can’t miss viewing opportunity.

The other areas of the Big Island – Puna, Kau, and North Kohala – are also beautiful areas to visit and are home to attractions like Punaluu Black Sand Beach, Lava Tree State Park, Parker Ranch & Lapakahi State Historical Park.
